If the former is true, then when it warms up it could potentially fail by cracking, or even pulling away from the surface it is adhered to. My thinking is that the paste contracts and/or dries out when exposed to extremely cold temperature. That and the fact that the MacBook Air is so thin, and there is no real thermal insulator between the case and the logic board. Although this area of the pickup truck should be insulated (you would think, as this console is specifically marketed pitching it as a place to store your notebook computer), it seems to not be so. Specifically, it has been left out in the center console of my 2007 Tundra when it has been very cold (10º F to 20º F). Each time I have run into the 3 beep scenario, it has occurred after the MacBook Air has been exposed to extremes in temperature. Please let me explain, as I do not think there is anything inherently wrong with this model. Having now had to do this repair twice, I am beginning to suspect that environmental conditions (temperature, ambient humidity) are directly affecting thermal paste on the Macbook Air (as least the Rev C). WARNING: You should do this ONLY you are an experienced repair person, and only if your computer is already out of warranty.įYI: I've been building, repairing and modding computers since 1987. Therefore, if you have recently had a MacBook Air exhibit the 3 beep boot failure, strongly consider checking your thermal paste. Rebooted and NO 3 beeps! Once again, my MacBook Air appears to be working perfectly.

I then removed the heatsink I found the thermal paste dried and hardened! I carefully removed all of the old paste and then applied new high quality thermal paste. Nothing else appeared burned, fractured, loose or disconnected. When I got down to the logic board, I inspected the 8 visible 1 gigabit chips visible. Made no sense that DRAM of any sort would fail after 15 months. On a hunch, as I have noticed my MacBook Air has overheated in the past, I opened mine up to check the THERMAL PASTE. My instinct says 1) yes 2) no 3) yes, which I guess is why I am writing this post, because the closest repair center is an hour away and it's and old hobby shop basically collecting dust and they won't have the memory and will have to order it and it'll probably end up taking as long as sending the whole thing in! Arggggggg.NEWS FLASH for MacBook Air users with 3 Beeps at startup!!!

MACBOOK PRO 3 BEEPS ON STARTUP MAC
The funny thing is besides this issue, I have never had a Mac as stable as this one-no kernel panics at all and it passes the Apple Hardware Test, which leads to my first question:Ģ) Should I just attempt to reseat the RAM first myself?ģ) Should I take it to the closest Apple authorized repair center? I'm kind of wondering whether the RAM was just never seated well it's the original 4 GB that came with the MacBook. However, after hanging up, I did see that it is a somewhat involved process. So, I knew he didn't know what he was talking about. He wanted me to send it in and said the RAM was not user-serviceable and that I would void the warranty if they sent out the RAM and I installed it myself (which is what I asked for). So, while this was happening I called AppleCare, and the guy I talked to this time wasn't even sure it was the RAM, but he put me on hold and then said he thought it was (I was letting him hear the beeps over the phone). But like every other time it eventually turned on. When I turned it back on over the course of an hour I got the 3 beeps non-stop every time I tried turning it on (maybe 20 times or so). Just today I had to turn it off to wipe down the screen and keyboard etc. But then the trip was cancelled, and I kind of forgot about the issue for a week. I was going to go on a trip through a town with an Apple Store so I decided to have them do it instead. So, I called in to AppleCare and the guy said he thought it was the RAM and that they would send me new RAM. The thing is that since I almost never turn it off I never noticed the issue before. My unibody MacBook 2.4 GHZ has had a 3 beep start up issue for a few weeks now that I have noticed.
